The Academy at HeronsGate

inspiration for the journey

"If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the
heart of man become in its long journey to the stars?"    ---G.K.Chesterton

"The Academy at HeronsGate" is what we call our family's  exclusive educational experience. We are a "directed-Unschooling" family enjoying life in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Our special urban location allows our children to explore the resources of both the city and the surrounding natural wonders of  our unique neighborhood.

Our educational philosophy is inspired by Charlotte Mason and  John Taylor Gatto and draws on wisdom from our family history and the local and global communities.  We believe strongly that parents are the primary educator in each child's life, and that oftentimes, that role is best played by acting as a facilitator or supervisor, not a lecturer. We also believe each child is an individual endowed with unique talents to be fostered, not a unit to be molded into a shape pre-determined by societal standards.

We also believe that in order to survive and thrive in the 21st century, today's kids need to be familiar and comfortable with modern technologies. Therefore, we encourage making extensive use of audio/visual and internet-based resources, and we partner with other online education communities such as Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) and Impact Virtual (www.impactvirtual.com)

Our core subjects are:

                                          Math

                                          Science/Computer science

                                          Art/Literature

                                          Latin/Greek/modern languages

Religion, History and PE are approached in a more holistic manner.

If you are interested in learning more about who we are and how we arrived where we are now, or in exploring more of the resources that contributed to our educational philosophy, please feel free to check the "blog" pages on this site. You'll find reading lists and helpful web links!
